The Foresee Framework
Is a self-administered personal development tool that could help individuals develop greater awareness and understanding towards their use of and impact of generative AI tools in their lives. The tool identifies four domains for individuals to interact with which are not intended or needed to be sequential but which connect strongly with the relationship between the ‘person’ and technology’.
Confidence
Being confident requires a realistic sense of one’s capabilities and feeling secure in that knowledge concerning generative AI. This is not objectively measurable and may not always accurately relate to actual skills and competence. Confidence is also contextual and will not be consistent in all scenarios relating to generative AI usage.
Competence
Competence evaluates the skills, knowledge, and behaviors underpinning the effective and ethical use of generative AI tools. It covers technical proficiency, problem-solving, adaptability, and an understanding of the ethical implications. It also involves assessing one’s capacity to analyze, question, and evaluate the impact and outcomes of using generative AI tools.
Criticality
Criticality involves reviewing your current stance and adopted position towards generative AI. This is as much about outlook and attitude as it is about the action you are taking (or not) to explore generative AI further.
Context
Context delves into the broader landscape, considering the impact of generative AI on the labour market which could include current or future work positions. Individuals reflect on how these technologies may disrupt traditional roles and industries and influence their career paths. Additionally, it prompts an exploration of their employer’s stance (where applicable) and whether they are skeptics, cautiously adoptive, or enthusiastic advocates of generative AI.
We have included a downloadable guide to the Foresee Framework which includes a more detailed description of the domains and scales we have used to allow further critical reflection.
Benefits for individuals and organisations
Enhanced learning and skill development: By engaging in self-reflection, individuals can identify their strengths, weaknesses, and areas for growth in utilising AI technologies. This awareness enables targeted learning and skill development initiatives, such as training aligned to organisational CPD initiatives.
Encouraging innovation: Employers can create a culture that encourages employees to experiment with generative AI tools and explore new ways of incorporating them into their work. As well as helping employees contribute to responsible AI adoption.
The Foresee Framework offers a structured approach: By exploring domains such as confidence, competence, criticality, and context, individuals can enhance their skills, make informed decisions, and navigate ethical considerations, while employers gain insights to foster a culture of innovation, adaptability, and responsible AI use across the organisation.
